India's first match in the ICC International Cup, which was later renamed the ICC Champions Trophy, took place in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 1998. 

The competition was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and it featured the top cricketing nations from around the world.

India's first match in this prestigious event was against the AUSTRALIA on October 28, 1998.

 The match was third quarter Final of the competition, and it marked a critical moment in Indian cricket history as India was making debut in this prestigious tournament of ICC called as mini world cup

India, led by captain Mohammad Azharuddin, faced off against the austrelia a team that had been one of the dominant forces in world cricket. The Indian team consisted of star players like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Anil Kumble, and Rahul Dravid.

The match was an exciting contest, with India posting a respectable total of 307 runs in 50 overs with help of Sachin Tendulkar 141 runs, Ajay Jadeja 71 runs and Rahul Dravid contribution of 48 runs.

Australia, however, gave tough fight to chase target of 308 runs. India won the match 44 runs which was the beginning of India's long history in international tournaments, including the ICC Champions Trophy.


Sachin Tendulkar elected as man of the match award for his allrounder performance in the match 141 runs in 128 balls with bat and 4 wickets for 38 runs.




Though the 1998 edition of the ICC International Cup didn’t see India clinch the title, it set the tone for future engagements in global cricket, with India eventually winning the Champions Trophy in 2002, further establishing their dominance in the sport.
